Hilda to decrease in intensity, but heading directly toward Hawaii Island


At 1100 am hst…2100 utc…the center of Hurricane Hilda was located near latitude 15.0 north…longitude 147.4 west. Hilda is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph…17 km/h. Hilda is forecast to gradually turn toward the northwest and move slightly more slowly over the next 48 hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 110 mph…175 km/h…with higher gusts.  Hilda is forecast to continue weakening over the next 48 Hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles…35 km…from the center…and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 90 Miles…150 km.

The updated track as seen on the tracking map b has the storm forecast to move over Hawai’i Island on Friday.


Hazards affecting land include high surf:  swells associated with hurricane Hilda will produce large Surf along east and southeast facing shores of the main Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days.
