Hilda weakens into a tropical storm

Hilda has now weakened into a tropical storm, however a tropical storm watch remains in effect for Hawaii County.

At 2pm HST the center of tropical storm Hilda was located near latitude 17.0 north and longitude 152.0 west. Hilda is moving toward the west near 6pm and this general motion is expected to continue over the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 70 mph with higher gusts. Steady weakening is expected over the next couple of days.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles.

Hilda is 275 miles southeast of Hilo.

A tropical storm watch is in effect for Hawaii County. A tropical storm means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 48 hours.

Rainfall from Hilda is expected to produce 6 to 12 inches of rainfall and coupld produce large and potentially life threatening surf along east and southwest facing shores of portions of the Hawaiian islands over the next couple of days.
