Tropical storm Hilda continues to weaken, moves to the northwest slowly

Tropical storm Hilda continues to weaken and move to the northwest slowly. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for Hawaii County.

As of 5pm HST the center of tropical storm Hilda was located near latitude 17.5 north and longitude 152.0 west. Hilda is moving toward the northwest near 5 mph. This slow motion is expected to continue today followed by a gradual turn toward the west and an increase in forward speed tonight through Thursday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. Weakening is expected over the next couple of days and Hilda is forecast to be a tropical depression by tonight or Thursday and a remnant low by Thursday night.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.

Hilda is currently 250 miles SE of Hilo.
