The Cleveland Cavaliers and All-NBA guard Donovan Mitchell have agreed to a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension, securing the franchise cornerstone for his prime years. As reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, the agreement features a full trade kicker and a player option for the 2030–31 season.  The historic extension yields an average annual value of just over $68 million, establishing a new peak in league history.

Mitchell became eligible for a new contract on Tuesday but opted against waiting another year, when he could have pursued an even larger supermax extension in free agency. Instead, the 29-year-old chose long-term security with Cleveland, signaling confidence in the organization’s direction following its deepest postseason run since acquiring him from the Utah Jazz in 2022. The Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference finals this past season before being eliminated by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks.

The extension follows another standout campaign for Mitchell, who averaged 27.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 70 regular-season games while earning his seventh consecutive All-Star selection and additional All-NBA recognition. Since arriving in Cleveland, Mitchell has established himself as one of the league’s premier guards, helping transform the Cavaliers into a consistent playoff contender while averaging more than 26 points per game with the franchise.

Although the lucrative extension further increases Cleveland’s long-term financial commitments under the NBA’s restrictive salary-cap system, the organization has made clear it intends to continue building around Mitchell as its franchise cornerstone. The early agreement also removes uncertainty surrounding his future and allows the Cavaliers to focus on strengthening a roster they believe is capable of competing for an NBA championship in the coming seasons. Mitchell previously expressed his commitment to the organization following the playoff exit, saying, “I love it here. I don’t know how else to say it. I have no doubt these guys can get there. We have unfinished business.”
