Worldwide COVID-19 cases at 266K–US may have 22K confirmed

The World Health Organization says as of Saturday, March 21, 2020, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 stands at 266,073 worldwide, in 183 countries or territories or areas, with 11,184 confirmed deaths.   Other news sources put the total cases at 297,000 with 12,755 deaths.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web site, last updated Friday March 20 at noon based on numbers on Thursday, March 19 at 4 p.m., the number of cases in the United States–in 15,219.  However, at the Saturday morning, March 21 White House Task Force update, Vice President Mike Pence said the number of confirmed cases in the United States stands at around 22,000.  There have been 278 deaths in the U.S.  Pence said more than 200,000 people have been tested, but noted that number does not include private labs.  New York has the most cases, followed by Washington State and California.

The Hawaii State Department of Health has confirmed 37 positive COVID-19 cases in the state, with 35 in those who have traveled or been in contact with travelers and 2 considered “community spread,” people with no known contact with anybody who has traveled.    The State Department of Health says 1 case is on the Big Island, a visitor from Texas who is sequestered at a Hilo hotel,  but sources say there are at least two more cases confirmed on the island.  New West Broadcasting will update this story upon confirmation.
