The Hawaii State Library System says bookdrops have now reopened at libraries on Hawaii Island.    The re-opening of the bookdrops represent the beginning of a phased-in approach to providing library services to support the health and safety of our communities.  No book donations will be accepted at this time.

To ensure the health and safety of our staff, all returned items will be placed into quarantine for a minimum of 4 days before checking those items in.  Depending on the date of return, and the location’s hours of operation, it may take a few days for your library account to reflect the return. No fines will be assessed during this period.  Items checked out starting Mar. 16 will now have a due date of June 15, 2020.

For questions about library card accounts and more, library patrons can call 808-586-3500 on Oahu, or toll-free at 800-390-3611 for all other islands, Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Library buildings will continue to remain closed to the public.  But the State Library System invites everybody to join the virtual services now offered.

Library Materials

Fines are suspended until the time the libraries reopen.  Due dates and holds have been automatically extended.

  • All items (including DVDs and HotPicks) checked-out starting March 16th will have a new due date of June 15, 2020.
  • No fines will be charged for items due between March 18th and the time libraries re-open to the public. For holds that you placed that haven’t been filled, those requests are being extended to make sure you still get what you want after we reopen.
  • For holds that are already at your favorite library, they may be picked up once the libraries reopen.
  • It is now possible to place HOLDS for future pick-up. You may receive an email that says that you have two weeks to pick-up, but all Holds requests are extended to June 15, 2020.

Online Resources – Free with a library card!
These online resources are available to access from home 24/7. Here are just a few online collections to try:
