A man who died from injuries sustained in a two motor vehicle crash that occurred on Tuesday morning, June 2, on Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road) near the 8.5-mile marker has been identified as 65-year-old Charles K. Makanui Jr., of Kona.

The Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a Negligent Homicide investigation and is asking that anyone who may have witnessed or have any information regarding the incident to contact Officer Clifford Antonio of the Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit at (808) 961-2339.

The  two-vehicle traffic crash near the intersection of Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Kaumana Drive occurred just after 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police have preliminarily determined that a 2001 Kenworth semi-truck driven by a 58-year-old male party from Hilo was traveling Kona bound on Daniel K. Inouye Highway approaching the Kaumana Drive Intersection.

A 2007 Honda sports utility vehicle driven by Makanui initiated a left-hand turn from the Hilo bound lanes of Daniel K. Inouye Highway to head onto Kaumana Drive.

The Honda SUV was struck broadside by the semi-truck. Makanui was dead at the scene.   The driver of the semi-truck was also injured and taken to Hilo Medical Center for treatment.

The Daniel K. Inouye Highway was closed from just after the time of the crash until shortly after 2 p.m., just over 4 1/2 hours for the police to investigate.

This is the 9th traffic fatality this year compared to 9 at this time last year.
