The State Department of Health’s noon report on Thursday, King Kamehameha Day, adds 7 COVID-19 cases to the state’s count–all on O’ahu.  The state now has 692 cases, with 623 released from isolation–meaning the State DOH says they are still monitoring 68 cases.  The majority of new cases in the last 7 days are on O’ahu.

In a Wednesday media briefing, State Director of Health Director Bruce Anderson said several of the newest cases are in families–yesterday 3 of the 4 new cases were in children in families where other(s) had been diagnosed with COVID-19.

The State’s interisland travel quarantine will be lifted next Tuesday, June 16.  All State officials–health and government–have stressed the importance of continuing to wear masks, especially anywhere there are others, and to continue to practice good hand hygiene and to physically distance from others.  And they also note that COVID-19 is still present in the state and we will continue to get new cases.  The reopening of interisland travel is the first step in seeing what will happen once people are traveling more freely, even within the state.

In the Wednesday media briefing, Tim Sakahara with the State Department of Transportation explained the new procedures for interisland travel — you must fill out a travel form either in advance or at the airport, have a temperature check, and answer health-related questions.  He also talked about how the airport is rearranging where planes land and take off to keep incoming and outgoing passengers separate, and plans for using thermal scanners and facial recognition devices to provide alerts to travelers who may have elevated temperatures.

Hawaii Island continues to have no active cases, with 81 cumulative cases.
