The State Department of Health says as of noon on Friday, July 3, 29 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed.   The state’s total case count is 975, with 754 released from isolation, or 221 cases being monitored by the State Department of Health.

Hawaii County has one new case, which now has a cumulative 96 with 5 active.  Three people overall have been hospitalized, including one person who is currently hospitalized.

Although State DOH has not released information about the location of cases on the Big Island, at least one new case is in an employee at Gertrude’s Jazz Bar in Kailua Village, which has announced after reopening that it is closed again until July 15.   Marlina Shirley, owner of Gertrude’s, says the worker was hosting a relative from the mainland who was under the mandatory 14-day quarantine.  The traveler has COVID-19 and spread it to the employee, who was not subject to the quarantine and was working.  Shirley said no other employees have tested positive.  She also said the Department of Health did not feel that any guests needed to be tested.

Hawaii News Now has reported that the new Hawaii Island case is in Kailua-Kona, connected to another cluster.

The 29 cases include 25 on O’ahu, 2 in Maui County, and one Hawaii resident who is out of state as well as the new Big Island case.

State DOH says at least 5 cases represent 3 new events and possible clusters. Cases on O‘ahu are widespread, in Honolulu, Kailua, Mililani, Pearl City, Wahiawa, Waialua, Waianae, Kaneohe, Waimanalo, and Waipahu.

Hawaiian Airlines confirmed on Thursday that 8 employees tested positive for COVID-19.  All were in a training session at HAL headquarters on O’ahu, and they and 60 others are now reportedly self-quarantining.

The State DOH report also shows one additional death in its summary report, bringing the state’s death toll from COVID-19 to 19, but it is not shown on the county-by-county summary, which still indicates 12 deaths on O’aho and one in Maui County.  State DOH says the latest death was an elderly woman on O’ahu who had underlying health conditions.

State Health Director Bruce Anderson said “As the state continues to reopen businesses and rebuild the economy, controlling the spread of COVID-19 will be the key to moving forward.  Controlling the spread of the virus requires everyone to wear a face covering whenever they are out and avoid crowded places, closed spaces, and close contact with those outside of their household.”
