A bill that would require Hawaii County Police Department–and all the county police departments–to reveal the names of officers who have been suspended or discharged awaits Governor David Ige’s signature.

On Monday, both houses of the Hawaii State Legislature passed Bill 285.  All other public employees were already subject to having their names released, if disciplined or fired, after the grievance process has been completed.

The bill was introduced last year but not acted on at the time, and held over until this year’s legislative session.  Other similar bills have been introduced in past years.  The State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO), the police union, opposed the bill.  In an interview earlier this year, Hawaii County Police Chief Paul Ferreira said he was opposed to the bill, as sometimes officers are suspended for minor offenses such as filing late reports or being late too many times.

Gov. Ige has not indicated whether he plans to sign the bill.
