The Hawaii State Department of Health Clean Water Branch has issued an advisory after around 20,000 gallon of sewage entered Kailua Bay due to a broken sewer line on Ali’i Drive near Sarona Lane.  State DOH says it has posted signs warning people out, and that they are collecting water quality samples.

The break happened Saturday morning, and Ali’i Drive downtown was closed until around 11:30 a.m. while crews worked on stopping the leak and repairing the line.

In previous interviews, Hawaii County Department of Environmental Management Director Bill Kucharski has said the sewer lines in the county are old and are in need of upgrading.
