US deaths pass 181,000; Hawaii Island has 96 known COVID patients

The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Friday, August 28, at 5:28 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 24,507,036    Worldwide deaths: 832,748

U.S. cases: 5,878,338    U.S. deaths: 181,022

According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide case report increased by 272,696 in the last 24 hours.  Deaths worldwide increased by more than 5,638.

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 45,757 cases in the last 24 hours.  In that time,  the number of reported deaths from  COVID-19 increased by 1,045.

Hawaii is in the throes of the pandemic, especially on O’ahu.  The state’s cumulative case count as of Thursday at noon was 7,566, with 5,140 active cases that State Health is supposed to monitor and contact trace.  O’ahu has  6,915 cumulative cases, with 4,884 active cases.  US Surgeon General Jerome Adams has been on O’ahu for the past several days, spearheading mass testing that has drawn thousands of O’ahu residents.  The deaths of 4 additional residents were reported yesterday, bringing the death toll from COVID-19 to 55.

The Big Island has not been spared.   As of Thursday, the cumulative count of COVID-19 cases was 253, with 96 active cases.

Hilo Medical Center Public Information Officer Elena Cabatu said as of noon Thursday, there were 14 people who have been admitted to the facility with COVID-19, 4 in the ICU and 10 in the COVID Unit, with all the COVID-19 patients separated from others with barriers and other protection. Of the seven residents of the Yukio Okotsu Veterans Home who have COVID-19, 2 are hospitalized and 5 are being cared for at “home,” at the Veterans Home in a special COVID-19 unit.  Cabatu said today, staff and residents will be tested again for COVID-19.
