World at 24M COVID, 838K deaths; U.S. 5.9M cases, 182K deaths–Hawaii in red zone

The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Saturday, August 29, at 5:28 a.m.:

Worldwide cases:  24,800,366    Worldwide deaths: 838,391

U.S. cases:   5,931,511   U.S. deaths: 182,069

According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide case report increased by 293,330 in the last 24 hours.  Deaths worldwide increased by more than 5,643.

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 53,173 cases in the last 24 hours.  In that time,  the number of reported deaths from  COVID-19 increased by 1,047.

Hawaii state’s total is 7,830 cases of COVID-19. There are 5,361 active cases in the state.  The state’s death toll is 59.  U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said on Thursday that the state is in the “red zone”, with a positivity rate of 10% or greater on recent test days.  The U.S. “goal” is 5% or less, in order to stem the spread of the virus.  Hawaii had a positivity rate on Friday of 9.6%.

On the Big Island, as of Friday afternoon:

—279 total cases

—117 active cases

—16 in Hilo Medical Center (3 in ICU, 13 in regular COVID-19 Unit)

–0 at Kona Community Hospital

–??? at North Hawaii Community Hospital (they won’t say)

Mayor Harry Kim is urging residents to get tested if they have been in large groups, have been exposed to COVID-19, or are concerned.  There is drive-through testing today at Waikoloa School and at Prince Kuhio Mall near the Macy’s Menswear store, from 9 until 1.  Bring insurance card if you have insurance, but no insurance is needed.
