Amidst a slew of complaints about unannounced closures of solid waste and green waste facilities, the County has decided to implement an alert system, similar to that used by Hawaii County Civil Defense or the Police Department, to let users know of changes in the County Department of Environmental Management’s facilities.

The alert system will advise users of  solid waste operational changes such as site closures, availability of services, hours of operation, special conditions affecting solid waste service (such as road closures, flooding, fires), or special events such as household hazardous waste collections.

The alerts may be sent as text messages, emails, and/or phone calls.  Alerts may be for all county waste facilities or for only specific transfer stations.

The link to sign up is at the solid waste website,   www.hawaiizerowaste.org,  or at https://member.everbridge.net/index/482552460607505#/signup.

Please note that this Solid Waste Division Mass Notification System is separate from the county Civil Defense Agency alerts, which can be found on the www.hawaiicounty.gov/departments/civil-defense website.  So even if you are already signed up for Civil Defense alerts, you’d have to sign up separately to hear about Solid Waste closures and notifications.
