13 COVID patients in Hilo Med Center, 1 in Kona Hospital

Hilo Medical Center has had an increase in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, up two from Friday’s 11.  And Kona Community Hospital has had one patient with COVID-19 for several days.  North Hawaii Hospital has not responded to a request for information.  Yukio Okutsu Veterans Center has revised its death toll from COVID-19 from 6 to 5.

The complete update on East Hawaii facilities:

HILO MEDICAL CENTER UPDATE (as of 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 5, 2020)

o   13 total COVID-positive patients are hospitalized: 5 in ICU, 8 in COVID Unit

  • YUKIO OKUTSU STATE VETERANS HOME UPDATE (as of 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 5, 2020)

o   A total of 54 residents and 18 employees have tested positive for COVID-19

  • 3 residents are currently hospitalized at Hilo Medical Center
  • 41 total residents are currently cared for at the veterans home’s COVID designated area
  • 5 residents have recovered
  • There are no deaths to report today.
  • However, there is a correction of 5 total deaths related to COVID-19 with significant, underlying health issues.   On Friday it was reported there were 6 people who had passed from the virus.  According to details from Avalon Healthcare, the managing company running the veterans home operations, one resident who passed had a pending PCR test, tested positive with the rapid/antigen test at the Emergency Department. PCR results that came back that last night was negative, according to Avalon.
