The Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard for Monday, September 7, at 5:28 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 27,164,557       Worldwide deaths: 889,627

U.S. cases:  6,282,823     U.S. deaths:  188,979

According to the Dashboard, the reported worldwide case report increased by 253,093 in the last 24 hours.  Deaths worldwide increased by more than 9,127.

According to the Johns Hopkins Dashboard, the United States has added 33,660 cases in the last 24 hours.  In that time,  the number of reported deaths from  COVID-19 increased by 405.  In the U.S., although the daily count and deaths continue to increase, they are doing so at a lower average rate than two months ago, when cases were increasing by around 60,000 a day and deaths were averaging 1,000 a day.

The U.S. still has the highest case count in the world.  India now has the second highest case count in the world, at 4,204,613 cases, followed by Brazil (4,137,521), and Russia (1,027,334).

In Hawaii, the case count is 9,855 with around 6,779  active cases.  The state has had 85 deaths as part of the formal count.

The Big Island as of Sunday afternoon had a cumulative total of 506 cases. There are around 277 active cases. There have been 7 deaths reported by Hilo Medical Center as a result of COVID-19, all in residents at the Yukio Okutsu Veterans Home.   (Only 3 of those deaths are in the formal state count, as yet.)  On Sunday afternoon, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz wrote letters to both Gov. David Ige and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Robert Wilkie, asking that Federal assistance be provided to the Veterans Home to help stop the infections.

Businesses, county offices, and Hawaii County Fire Department stations have all had workers with cases of COVID-19.  On Sunday, the County Fire Department reported that a firefighter and a recruit have both tested positive and as a result, 30 other fire department personnel are in quarantine because of possible exposure to the virus.
