Big Island hospital COVID update

This morning (Saturday), Hawaii County Civil Defense reports that 9 people on the island are hospitalized with COVID-19.

Friday afternoon, Hilo Medical Center reported they had 6 people in the hospital, with 1 in the Intensive Care Unit, and 5 in the COVID-19 Unit.

So far, Hilo Medical Center has confirmed 35 deaths.

Late Friday, Kona Community Hospital reported they had 4 people in the hospital with COVID-19, with 3 in the Intensive Care Unit on ventilators and 1 in the Med-Surg Acute Care Unit.

So far, Kona Community Hospital has confirmed 1 death.

Johnny Gillespie, media contact for University of the Nations, said nobody from the University of the Nations has been hospitalized.  University of the Nations has a large cluster of people with COVID-19, 44 at last count.  The County partnered with Premier Medical Group and the State Department of Health to provide testing for everybody associated with the University of the Nations, and so far have tested 955 people.  The University of the Nations brings in people from 40 to 50 countries every few months.  The Christian university prides itself on outreach, bringing what they say is education and health care along with their religious beliefs to people around the world and on the Big Island.

Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital reported no COVID-19 patients Friday afternoon.
