Spending your COVID-19 home time in the garden?  Tomorrow, you may get two free trees!  The East Hawaii Outdoor Circle is sponsoring the event:

Location:       Ho’olulu Park on Manono St across from the Afook-Chinen Civic Center

Date:               Saturday, October 24

                         8:30 am – 12:00 noon

How:   Made possible through a grant from The Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with International Paper for the Community Tree Recovery program, which promotes replanting efforts to help mitigate the long-term impacts of Hurricane Lane and the Kilauea volcanic eruption that both took place in 2018.

Due to COVID -19 considerations, the event will be in a drive through format. Every vehicle will be able to select 2 free trees.  the group has secured more than 700 trees from local nurseries.  There will be fruit trees from Plant It Hawaii, Ohia from Big Island Plants, Moringa from Aao Farms, Maafala and Hawaiian ulu from Hawaii Ulu Producers Cooperative, Cacao from Daily Kneads as well as kukui from a private grower. Plants are from 6” to 3 gallon pots, with most in the 1-3 gallon size.

Details on specific varieties, care and uses can be found at www.outdoorcircle.org/east-hawaii-island.html

The Outdoor Circle began in 1912 by a group of women who were appalled at the proliferation of billboards around Honolulu – even on the slopes of Diamond Head!  The group eventually prevailed and began what is now known today as The Outdoor Circle (TOC).   The organization’s goal is to protect Hawai‘i’s unique natural beauty for future generations through community improvement projects, public education and advocacy.  TOC is also very involved with the planting/replanting of trees and vegetation for beautification/environmental purposes and helps keep illegal signage from proliferating.

Various branches have been active since the 1950’s. Currently, on Hawaii Island, we have branches in East Hawaii, Waimea and Waikoloa.  The East Hawaii Outdoor Circle (EHOC) was re-started in 2016, after several years of hiatus.  EHOC is a small but active group, always looking for additional members to carry on the Outdoor Circle legacy in East Hawaii.

EHOC can be reached at: https://www.facebook.com/easthawaiioc  (Facebook Page, and info.ehoc@gmail.com.
