The State Department of Health has confirmed 38 new cases of COVID-19.  The state’s total count is now 14,709 , with 3,053 active cases.

O’ahu has 25 new cases. Kaua’i has 1 new case, and there are 2 new cases in Hawaii residents out of state.

The State Department of Health has now broken down Maui County into its individual islands.  The report shows Maui having 401 cases, Lanai having 79 cases, and Moloka’i having 17 cases.  The total, 497, is the same as Maui County had yesterday, so none of the islands have added any cases in today’s report.

Regarding the large outbreak on Lanai, Gov. David Ige said today in a State House COVID-19 Committee briefing that he has approved Maui County Mayor Mike Victorino’s request for a “stay at home” order for Lanai, beginning Tuesday morning at 12:01 a.m.  The cases on Lanai began with a funeral gathering and other gatherings.

The Big Island has 9 new cases.  That brings the island’s total to 1,230 cases, with 342 active.

The island now has 42 total deaths (only 28 in the state report), with 2 more deaths reported by Life Care Center of Hilo.  According to the Life Care website,

• 55 resident cases: 19 active resident cases at the facility, with one receiving proactive treatment at Hilo Medical Center. 10 resident deaths at facility. Two residents discharged. 23 recovered.
• 17 associate cases: two active associate cases; 15 associates fully recovered.

Life Care Center of Kona says they’ve had no COVID-19 cases.

Hawaii County Civil Defense says many of the recent cases are in housing units in North Kona and South Hilo, and also point to gatherings without masks.

Today, Dr. Mark Mugiishi of HMSA said the state’s pre-testing program, followed by post-testing on the Big Island and other islands, seems to be showing that there are few visitors coming into the state with COVID-19, and he believes the positivity rate of incoming travelers is below or no higher than the state’s positivity rate.

All members of the committee concurred with Dr. Josh Green’s Facebook post yesterday that everybody needs to wear a mask, and most importantly, the rules and proclamations must be clear on that point and then communication can be clear.
