The State Department of Health has reported 198 new cases of COVID-19 in the state, bringing the state’s total to 19,148 total cases of COVID-19.

The Big Island added 17 cases. The island has lost 49 people to COVID-19, although the state is counting only 43 of those so far in its COVID-19 death toll of 271.

The island-by-island breakdown as provided by State Department of Health, reflecting numbers from Thursday, Dec. 10, 2020:

Where Total New
State 19,148 198
Hawaii County   1,708   17
Oahu 16,211 153
Maui    684   22
Kaua’i    130    5
Out of state   287    1

Today a CDC panel agreed with the FDA that the Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine should be approved for use in people 16 and over, with a few exceptions. The last step in the approval process is the formal order to be issued by CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield.

The vaccine should be shipped out starting on Sunday, if Dr. Redfield issues the formal order.  Hawaii is on track to receive nearly 5,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.  Moderna’s application for an Emergency Use Authorization will be reviewed by the FDA on Dec. 17.  On Friday, State health and government officials gave an update on the state’s vaccine distribution plan.  State Health Director Dr. Libby Char said the state will receive a total of 81,000 doses of both vaccines by the end of December.
