The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has declared April  Distracted Driver Awareness Month and the Hawaiʻi Police Department  strongly supports this campaign.
In response to national data that shows a 10 percent increase in distracted driving since 2018, federal safety officials and the Hawai‘i County Police Department have launched a new driver safety campaign intended to raise awareness about the risks associated with distracted driving.  These risky activities include smartphone use, texting, eating and drinking and engaging in other activities while driving.
This April, Hawaiʻi County Police will pay special attention to drivers using electronic devices as they travel.  The fine for using a cell phone while driving is currently $297.
