(AP) — Hawaiʻi bankruptcies dropped to their lowest level for the month of May in 15 years as the economy claws out of a coronavirus pandemic-induced slowdown. U.S. Bankruptcy Court data shows there were 100 cases in May, down more than 10% from the same month last year. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the last time there were fewer cases in the month of May was in 2006. State economist Eugene Tian expects bankruptcy filings will remain low as the economy reopens, travel restrictions are lifted and stimulus funds from the federal government lend support.
