(AP) — Oahu’s population increased by 6.6% over the past decade to top 1 million for the first time. Data from the 2020 census says Honolulu County had 1.016 million people. Kauaʻi County had the fastest growth of any county in the state as its population jumped 9.3% to more than 73,000. The Big Island was next with 8.4% growth, as Hawaiʻi County’s population exceeded 200,000. The slowest growth among the state’s four major counties was observed in Maui County. It had nearly 165,000 people, up 6.4% from the previous decade.  States will use Thursday’s data to outline districts for the U.S. Congress and state legislatures.
