The County of Hawai‘i Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division announced the closures of several waste transfer stations. These closures are being taken as a precaution by the County of Hawaiʻi in its ongoing efforts to address the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases in the community, and for the health and safety of employees and the public.

The Volcano transfer station is currently closed through Thursday, September 2, 2021.  Residents in the Volcano Community may take their household-generated waste to the Hilo transfer Station, Keaʻau transfer station, or the Pāhoa transfer station. These alternate facilities will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, August 31, 2021 the Hāwī and Keauhou facility closures will go into effect and the first closures of the Hilo, Kea‘au, and Pāhoa facilities will start on Wednesday, September 1, 2021.  On those dates and until further notice Hilo, Keaʻau and Pāhoa stations will be closed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  Hāwī and Keauhou transfer stations will be closed Tuesdays and Thursdays and open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

For more information visit  www.hawaiizerowaste.org website and register for Solid Waste Notifications (via email or text) for future closure information and locations, or call the solid waste division office at 961-8270.
