Five Transfer Stations Plan to Resume Regular Operating Hours

The County has announced that five transfer stations are planning to resume their normal operating hours this Monday, September 13, 2021.  The Hawaiʻi County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) and the Office of the Mayor say they have established creative solutions to return the Hāwī, Keauhou, Hilo, Kea‘au, and Pāhoa stations to their regular schedules.

Since August 31, 2021 COVID-19-related staffing issues have caused interruptions and reduced services at the Hāwī and Keauhou facilities to Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the Hilo, Kea‘au, and Pāhoa facilities to Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

The staffing shortages are now being alleviated due to the emergency assistance of a private vendor in transferring waste from the reload facility in Hilo to the West Hawai‘i Sanitary Landfill through temporary hires of equipment operators and solid waste facility attendants, as well as coordination among multiple County departments and the Department of Health.

Residents can visit hawaiizerowaste.org for scheduled hours of operation at facilities island-wide, and register online to receive notifications about service interruptions.
