The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has suspended Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Foligno for two games for kneeing Winnipeg Jets forward Adam Lowry during their game on Tuesday. The play happened at the end of an altercation between Foligno and Lowry midway through the third period when Foligno used his knee to push Lowry’s head to the ice. Lowry was not injured on the play. The Jets went on to win the game, 2-0.

The suspension is the first supplementary discipline Foligno has received in his NHL career, which spans over 644-games. The Department of Player Safety explained the suspension, saying, “We have heard Foligno’s argument that this was not a violent knee strike or an exceptionally forceful blow, and we agree. It is only the relative lack of force on this play that keeps Foligno from being subject to much more severe discipline for an action that is unacceptable for an NHL player to perform.”
