For the first time since 1986, Canada’s men’s national team is going to the World Cup. Canada became the first CONCACAF country to clinch a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, defeating Jamaica 4-0 on Sunday to improve to 8-4-1 in the octagonal. It will be Canada’s first appearance in 36 years, and just its second appearance overall.

Canada had an 11-match unbeaten run, including a 2-0 win over the United States on Jan. 30 and a 2-1 win over Mexico on Nov. 16, before falling to Costa Rica 1-0 last Thursday. The Canadians will face Panama on Wednesday.

The Canadian team that advanced to the 1986 World Cup went 0-3 in group play. This year’s squad will go to Qatar looking to score the country’s first-ever goal in a World Cup.
