Pedestrian Struck in Hilo Hit and Run Dies

Hawai‘i Island police are continuing to investigate a hit-and-run traffic collision involving a woman and a motor vehicle that took place on Wednesday, May 11 in Hilo.

The investigation has changed from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide investigation after police were informed that the pedestrian, identified as 64-year-old Carrie Ikawa of Hilo, passed away on Thursday, May 12.   An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

On Wednesday, police  discovered that Ikawa was outside her parked vehicle, a 2018 Ford pickup truck, located on Hualālai Street, when she was struck by a 2013 Ford Explorer traveling north on Hualalai.

The East Hawaiʻi Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing to investigate this traffic collision through the examination of the vehicles, evidence, and information obtained via witness(es).
 
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Sergeant Jeremy Riddle at (8080 961-2391 or via email at Jeremy.Riddle@hawaiicounty.gov.
