Police are asking the public to provide them with any information they may have regarding a fatal hit and run collision that occurred yesterday morning on Kuakini Highway south of the 119 mile marker in North Kona, killing an unidentified woman.

Police determined that an unknown vehicle was heading north on the highway when it struck the woman, who was in an unlit and unmarked area of the northbound lane.  The driver fled the scene without rendering aid to the female pedestrian who was wearing dark clothing.  She was transported to Kona Community Hospital where and later pronounced dead.  An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Police at the scene determined that there may have been two vehicles involved in the collision and located debris from a 2017-2020 KIA Niro and a 2013-2016 Chevrolet Malibu.  There were also reports that the collision might have been captured on home video surveillance.

Police are asking the public to review home or business surveillance videos taken between the hours of 3:30am and 5am on Sunday, July 24, for any vehicles matching the descriptions above.  The vehicles would have sustained damage to the driver’s side front fender and bumper.

Failure to render aid when a person is killed in a traffic collision is a Class “B” felony that may be punishable by up to 10 years in prison and fines up to $25,000. Failure to render aid is covered under section 291C-14 of the Hawaii Revised Statutes.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Officer Len Hamakado at (808) 326-4646 Ext. 229 or via email at len.hamakado@hawaiicounty.gov.
