Hawaiʻi County DUI Statistics: December 19-25

During the week of December 19 through December 25, 2022, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident while four of the drivers was under the age of 21.

Thus far in 2022, there have been 965 DUI arrests compared with 1,057 during the same period in 2021, a decrease of 8.7 percent. 

There have been 829 major accidents so far in 2022 compared with 801 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.5 percent. 

To date, there have been 32 fatal crashes (one fatal crash reclassified on 05/30/22 due to a medical condition) resulting in 34 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one reclassified due to a medical condition), compared with 26 fatal crashes, resulting in 26 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 23.1 percent for fatal crashes, and 30.8 percent for fatalities.
