Hawai‘i County police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation after a man reportedly jumped to his death off the Puueo Bridge last night.

After receiving a number of reports of a man that had jumped off the bridge and into the Wailuku River, south Hilo patrol officers and Hawai‘i County Fire Department members responded to the scene and located the man’s lifeless body and recovered his remains from the water.

The victim, who is believed to be in a male in his early 70s, was transported to Hilo Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of next of kin. An autopsy has been scheduled for later this week to determine the exact cause of death.

Police ask anyone with information regarding this incident to call the police department’s non-emergency number at (808) 935-3311, or Detective Kimo Keliipaakaua of the Area I Criminal Investigation Section at (808) 961-2375 or via email Kimo.Keliipaakaua@hawaiicounty.gov.
