Hawaiʻi County DUI Statistics: January 9-15

During the week of January 9 through January 15, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 21 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. while four of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

Thus far in 2023, there have been 49 DUI arrests compared with 46 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.5 percent.

There have been 41 major accidents so far in 2023 compared with 26 during the same period last year, an increase of 57.7 percent. 

To date, there have been three fatal crashes, resulting in three fatalities, compared with two fatal crashes, resulting in two fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 50 percent for fatal crashes and 50 percent for fatalities.
