Yesterday, a 73-year-old California man, who has yet to be positively identified, suffered critical injuries following a single-vehicle collision at the intersection of Henry Street and Hale Kapili Street in North Kona.

Hawai’i County Police determined that a green 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup truck, driven by 39-year-old Graham Allen Racine of Kailua-Kona, was turning left onto Henry Street when it struck the 73-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk. He was transported Kona Community Hospital where he is currently listed in critical condition.

After striking the pedestrian, Graham Allen Racine fled the scene however later turned himself in at the Kealakehe Police Station.  He was was arrested for the following offenses:

  • first-degree negligent injury
  • failure to render aid
  •  accident involving substantial bodily injury
  • operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant

Racine remains in custody at the Kealakehe Police Station while the investigation is continuing.

Police believe that speed and impairment are possible factors in the collision.

The Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a traffic crash investigation and is asking for anyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact Officer Adam Roberg at (808) 326-4646 ext. 229, or email at adam.roberg@hawaiicounty.gov.
