The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) is notifying State residents of a printing error affecting Driver Licenses and State Identification Cards. The error is the incorrect printing of the large “Hawaiʻi” text on the front of the cards, which was caused by a hardware change by the card vendor. Although the mistake has been corrected, Hawaiʻi residents who received a State Driver’s License or Identification Card in February 2023 are encouraged to check their cards to see if they have a misprinted credential.

Credentials with the misprint can be used normally because they have the proper security features in place. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and law enforcement statewide have been notified and provided samples of this printing error and have agreed to treat the misprinted credentials as a valid form of identification.

A total of 2,450 misprinted credentials were mailed out and will require re-printing. A breakdown by county is included below:

City and County of Honolulu – 1,684

County of Hawaiʻi – 353

County of Kauaʻi – 121

County of Maui – 292

The vendor will issue replacements, which will begin to be reissued this month, at no cost to those effected by the misprint.

For questions, please contact your county driver licensing office.

County of Hawaiʻi:                        (808) 961-2335

County of Kauaʻi:                          (808) 241-4242

County of Maui:                            (808) 270-7363
