The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) increased the speed limit on Volcano Road (Route 11) between the highway’s intersections with North Ala Road and Old Volcano Road, through Kurtistown. 

The limit change took effect yesterday after the installation of new signage.  45 mph was the area’s previous speed limit, however it was reduced to 35 mph on January 23, 2023.

The return to the old limit was made after traffic data collection and community input. The goal of the speed limit change is to improve traffic flow through the area at an appropriate speed for the rural context of this section of highway.
