The 19th Annual Celebration of Life hosted by Hawai`i Care Choices, formerly Hospice of Hilo, will take place at Reed’s Bay Beach Park on Sunday, May 28 from 3:30pm to 7:30pm.

This Sunday’s event, which celebrates 40 years of care across East Hawaiʻi, will give families the opportunity to honor their late loved ones and recognize healthcare workers.

The event will include food trucks and activity booths from local businesses and non-profit organizations.

Entertainment and performances will also take place throughout the day. The 2023 Obon Season for the entire island will begin at this event as the island’s famous Hilo’s Bon Dance Club from the will engage the audience – for the first time in three years since the pandemic.

The official ceremony will begin once the beach is prepared with special ocean mats for the safety. After prayers and blessings of multiple faiths, participants will be able to launch their decorated lanterns.

Luminaries to decorate are available for a $25 purchase on the Hawaiʻi Care Choices website through May 26 while supplies last. They can also be picked up from 8:30am -4pm at the Hawai`i Care Choices headquarter located on 1011 Waianuenue Avenue in Hilo.

Event parking will be available at the Civic Auditorium with free continuous shuttles to Reed’s Bay beginning at 2:30pm until 6pm. Return shuttles will begin immediately following the lantern release.

For more information, visit the Hawai`i Care Choices website at https://www.hawaiicarechoices.org or call (808) 969 – 1733.
