Big Island DUI Statistics: June 26 – July 2

During the week of June 26 through July 2, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 15 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision, while one of the drivers arrested was under the age of twenty-one.

Thus far in 2023, there have been 499 DUI arrests compared with 526 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.13 percent.

The Hawai’i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 432 major collisions so far in 2023 compared with 387 during the same period in 2022, an increase of 11.63 percent.

To date, there have been 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatal crashes, and 50 percent for fatalities.
