According to a report in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was arrested on Sunday by Frisco police on charges of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Per Frisco Police Department, the controlled substance possession is a low-level felony in the state of Texas while the unlawful carrying of a weapon is a misdemeanor offense. Frisco police told the Star-Telegram that the 24-year-old Williams allegedly had marijuana, warranting the controlled substance charge

The Cowboys are reportedly aware of the arrest and declined to comment. It will likely lead to an investigation from the NFL and potential suspension. According to the NFL’s expectations and standards of conduct, “It is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. We are all held to a higher standard and must conduct ourselves in a way that is responsible, promotes the values of the NFL, and is lawful.”

Williams played in the Cowboys’ 22-14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, notching a sack and two tackles. He reportedly returned with the team early Sunday morning and attended practice Tuesday after the team took Monday off. Last season, Williams recorded 14 solo tackles, four assists, four tackles and one forced fumble.

This is not Williams first brush with the law; before the Cowboys selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he was arrested on a felony sexual battery charge in July 2020. At the time, Williams was suspended from Ole Miss team activity shortly after the arrest, and reinstated in September of that year when the case was no longer active.  And last season, Williams was cited for misdemeanor reckless driving, with police saying he drove up to 98 mph in a 55 mph zone and weaved between vehicles, causing a two-car crash. Williams missed one game after being injured in the Dec. 22 collision.
