Hawaiʻi County D.U.I. Statistics: August 14-20

During the week of August 14 through August 20, 2023, Hawai`i Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision, while one of the drivers was under the age of twenty-one.

Thus far in 2023, there have been 617 DUI arrests compared with 647 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.6 percent.

The Hawai’i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 539 major collisions so far in 2023 compared with 519 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.9 percent.

To date, there have been 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities, (one of which had multiple deaths); compared with 23 fatal crashes, resulting in 25 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths) for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 56.5 percent for fatal crashes, and 56 percent for fatalities.

To date, the non-traffic fatality count so far this year is 1 compared to 0 non-traffic fatalities (not on a public roadway) for the same time last year.
