Hawaiʻi County D.U.I. Stats: May 6-12

During the week of May 6 through May 12, 2024, Hawai`i Island police arrested 22 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.  Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while  two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far in 2024 there have been 347 DUI arrests compared with 371 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.5 percent.

The Hawai‘i County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 366 major crashes thus far in 2024, compared with 326 during the same time last year, a 12.3 percent increase.

To date, there were 15 fatal crashes, resulting in 17 fatalities (two of which had multiple deaths), compared with 7 fatal crashes, resulting in 8 fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths, and one died at a later date) for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 114.3 percent for fatal crashes and 112.5 percent for fatalities.
