(AP) – Young voters in Hawaii who will cast ballots for the first time this year say they are excited and nervous as elections get closer. Young people are a growing portion of the electorate, with more than 8 million members of Generation Z eligible to vote for the first time in the 2024 elections. But voter turnout among young people tends to be low. Challenges like registering to vote for the first time or casting ballots from out-of-state can deter young people from participating. Although Hawaii allows teens to preregister and the Department of Education requires a course on democracy and government, some say more should be done to help engage young people in the voting process.
