During the week of September 16, through September 22, 2024, Hawai‘i Island police arrested 26 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Eight of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, while two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far in 2024, there have been 720 DUI arrests compared with 698 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.2 percent.

The Hawaiʻi County Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 719 major crashes so far this year, compared with 620 during the same time last year, an increase of 19.4 percent.

To date, there were 20 fatal crashes, resulting in 22 fatalities, compared with 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 81.8 percent for fatal crashes and 83.3 percent for fatalities.
