Abdi Nageeye wins men’s, Sheila Chepkirui tops women’s division of NYC Marathon

NEW YORK^ USA - NOV 6^ 2021: 2021 New York City Marathon^ 50th running of that city premier long-distance race^ was held on November 7^ 2021

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands won the 2024 New York City Marathon on Sunday, with Kenyan runner Sheila Chepkirui defeated reigning women’s champion Hellen Obiri to win the women’s division. Nageeye and Chepkirui collected a $100,000 prize for their victories.

The 35-year-old Nageeye, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, took the men’s title in 2:07:39, defeated 2022 champion Evans Chebet of Kenya by six seconds with a final push during the last quarter mile of the race. 2021 champ Albert Korir finished in third. Three American men placed in the Top 10 of the race: Connor Mantz, Clayton Young, and CJ Albertson.

Chepkirui finished the race with an official time of 2:24:35, nearly 15 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Obiri, also of Kenya. The top American woman finisher was Sara Vaughn, who was followed by Jessica McClain and Kellyn Taylor.

This year marked the first time that athletes from the United States swept both women’s and men’s wheelchair events — Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s division with a time of 1:36:31, while Susannah Scaroni won the women’s division with a time of 1:48:05.
