Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (4) on November 3^ 2024 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday that veteran quarterback Dak Prescott will have season-ending surgery to repair his injured hamstring. Prescott partially tore the hamstring during the Cowboys’ 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 3 in Atlanta.

Jones made the announcement during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan, stating: “He [Prescott] will have [surgery] tomorrow. He’ll have it there in New York. He wants to do that there. He’s got great medical doctors up there. It’s a more common injury in hockey. And he’s got doctors who are very familiar with how to repair that, and his prognosis is wonderful. It just means that we’re not going to have him the rest of the year.”

Second-string quarterback Cooper Rush and third-string option Trey Lance both played in the Cowboys’ Week 10 loss to the Eagles, with Rush completing 13 of 23 passes for 45 yards and losing two fumbles, and Lance completing 4 of 6 passes for 21 yards and an interception.  Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy told reporters earlier in the week that Rush will start in Week 11: “We’ve got a lot of faith in Cooper. Everybody believes in him.”

The Cowboys signed Prescott to a four-year, $240 million contract extension in September. The three-time Pro Bowl selection completed 64.7% of his throws for 1,978 yards, 11 scores and eight interceptions through eight starts this season, and completed a career-best 69.5% of his passes for 4,516 yards, an NFL-best 36 touchdowns and nine interceptions over 17 starts last season.

The Cowboys have a 3-6 record and are in third place in the NFC East, behind the Philadelphia Eagles (7-2) and Washington Commanders (7-3).  Dallas will host the Houston Texans (6-4) on Monday in Arlington at 8:15 p.m. EST.
