Hawai‘i Island police are investigating a single motor-vehicle collision in Pāpa‘ikou that critically injured a 48-year-old female pedestrian.

On February 7,  police determined that a 2018 Honda HR-V operated by a 55-year-old Hilo man was traveling south bound on Highway 19 when it struck a man and woman were walking west in the marked crosswalk at the intersection of Highway 19 and Mill Road.  The woman sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment and is listed in critical condition.

The male pedestrian was not struck, and neither he nor the male driver of the Honda sustained any injuries in the collision.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit responded to the scene and is continuing the investigation, which is classified as a negligent injury. At this time, police do not believe speed, alcohol and/or drugs are factors in this investigation.

Police ask that if anyone has information regarding this collision, to please contact Officer Johnathan Rapoza at (808) 961-2339 or via email at Johnathan.Rapoza@hawaiicounty.gov.
