The Hawai‘i County Police Department (HPD) launched a homicide investigation following a shooting that killed 25-year-old woman.

Dozens of investigators led a search for the suspect, 28-year-old Isaiah Kaleo Jiaan Fourshey of Mountain View, who was believed to be armed with a handgun.

On Tuesday evening, an officer-involved shooting involving Forshey took place near the Nāmakanipaio Campground off Highway 11 in Volcano. Fourshey was subsequently transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he died. Neither HPD personnel, National Park Service rangers, nor any bystanders were injured. A portion of Highway 11 was closed at the intersection to the campground for several hours during the incident.

The HPD Office of Professional Standards has initiated a critical incident review as standard practice. HPD personnel, including a detective with 15 years of service and a second detective with 7 years of service, have each been placed on administrative leave to ensure they are mentally, emotionally, and physically able to return to work.

Because this incident occurred within the Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has primary jurisdiction and has taken over the primary investigation.
