The Hawai‘i County Police Department is seeking witnesses to a major motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Manono Street in Hilo on the morning of April 3.

Police determined the crash involved a black 2024 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, a subsidized HPD vehicle, and a gray 2015 Lexus SUV.

Preliminary investigation revealed the Silverado was traveling eastbound on Kamehameha Avenue when it collided broadside with the passenger side of the Lexus SUV, which was crossing the intersection southbound onto Manono Street.

As a result of the collision, both vehicles were disabled in the intersection. The officer was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center with apparent minor injuries. The occupants of the Lexus, a 62-year-old female driver and her 3-year-old male passenger, were also transported to the hospital. The female sustained minor lacerations and a fractured rib, while the child received minor scrapes and bruises.

The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit and the Office of Professional Standards are continuing this investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has information related to this incident to come forward.

Witnesses are urged to contact Detective Steven Grace of the Hawai‘i Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards at (808) 961-2290 or via email at Steven.Grace@hawaiicounty.gov.
