NHL Playoffs Round 1: Hurricanes, Maple Leafs, Knights win Game 1

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the New Jersey Devils 4-1 to take a 1-0 lead in their first round, best of seven series. Jalen Chatfield scored a first-period goal for the Hurricanes, with Logan Stankoven scoring two second-period goals in his first playoff game with Carolina, and Andrei Svechnikov added an empty-net goal late in the third to clinch the win. Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators 6-2 to take Game 1 of their first-round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Toronto’s Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the first period, with Mitch Marner adding another to make it 2-0. Morgan Rielly added another goal, and Toronto later scored three goals on a power play from John Tavares, William Nylander and Matthew Knies. Anthony Stolarz had 31 saves to secure the victory against Ottawa, with Game 2 set for Tuesday night in Toronto.

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Minnesota Wild, 4-2, at T-Mobile Arena on April 20, 2025 on Sunday. Brett Howden scored two goals, while Tomas Hertl had a goal and an assist for the Golden Knights; and Pavel Dorofeyev also scored, with Adin Hill making 18 saves. Game 2 is set for Tuesday night in Las Vegas.
