60-year-old Terry Lytle of Ocean View, who was struck near the intersection of Kino‘ole Street and Ponahawai Street in Hilo has died.

Responding officers determined that a 2001 Ford E250 van, operated by a 39-year-old Hilo man, was traveling southbound on Kino‘ole Street when Lytle walked into traffic eastbound, outside of a marked crosswalk. The van struck Lytle, causing him to sustain life-threatening injuries. He was transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Lytle succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

The operator of the van was not injured and was not arrested as a result of the collision.

At this time, police do not believe that speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the crash.

Police have reclassified the investigation from a negligent injury to a negligent homicide.
