The Atlanta Braves announced on Monday that they have placed third baseman Austin Riley back on the 10-day injured list with a strained lower abdominal muscle. The Braves also recalled infielders Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Jonathan Ornelas and optioned outfielder Jarred Kelenic to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers.

The Braves posted on X: “The #Braves today recalled INF Nacho Alvarez Jr. to Atlanta and placed INF Austin Riley on the 10-day injured list with a strained lower abdominal muscle. Additionally, the club recalled INF Jonathan Ornelas to Atlanta after optioning OF Jarred Kelenic to Triple-A Gwinnett following yesterday’s game.”

Riley had previously been place on the injured list on July 12 from the same issue – a lower abdominal strain. He just recently returned from the IL on July 25 after his recovery from the injury.

The incident that seemingly caused Riley to re-aggravate the abdominal strain took place during the Braves’ 4-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in Bristol, Tenn; Riley sustained the injury during the first inning while stretching to tag out Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz at home plate. He stayed on his knees after the play, indicating he hurt himself and left the game.

Through his first 102 games this season, Riley is batting .260/.309/.428 with 16 home runs, 20 doubles and 54 RBI in 447 plate appearances. The two-time All-Star hit .256 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs over 110 appearances last season, and has hit more than 30 home runs each season from 2021-2023, with a career-best .303 in 2021. Over seven MLB seasons, he has a .270/.334/.492 slash average with 168 doubles, 169 homers and 483 RBI in 821 games.
